GT6 Mk1 (July 1966 - September 1968)
Introduced in 1966 and visually in-line with Spitfire 4 Mk2 (bumpers underneath the grill, large over-riders etc.). The Vitesse-derived 2-litre engine was shoehorned in and produced a respectable 95bhp (106bhp/ton) gave a top speed of around 106mph and a 0-60 time of 10.4 seconds. However, although the owners of the car never reported it themselves, the press wrote that the rear end suspension set-up was inadequate. Indeed at speed, the car can be a handful in a tight bend. At best the result would be embarrassing for the unsuspecting driver (to the amusement of any onlookers), at worst it could be a lot more painful to man and machine. GT6 Mk2 (July 1968 - December 1970)
Gt6_Mk2-front-s.jpg (13411 bytes) The car was updated in step with the Mk3 Spitfire, though quite a bit later than the '67 facelift of its sibling. Bumpers are raised across the grill and the rear light clusters tidied up. Better ventillation and supposed better engine breathing (though nothing was ever changed!) means louvres on top of the bonnet are removed, though ones at side of bonnet are kept to woo US buyers. New suspension at rear coined 'Rotaflex' completely transformed the cars stability and handling, whilst keeping costs down. By way of a new cylinder head and better valvegear/camshaft, the car gets more power at 104bhp (117bhp/ton). This gave an improved top end of 110mph and 60 coming up from rest at 9.5 seconds. Enough to embarrass many of today's cars. Arguably this is the best car of the bunch, retaining much of the original styling with safer handling and better performance.

GT6 Mk3 (October 1970 - December 1973)
Final mark of the GT6, the car had been steadily developed into a stylish and fast two-seater Grand Tourer. Visually similar to the Spitfire Mk4/1500, the car had the de-seamed bonnet (with the 'power bulge' widened and flattened). Rear wing trim is now painted black, instead of chrome. Gimmicky louvres now removed altogether and the car appears lower and sleeker. Rear end completely redesigned and now features Stag-like Triumph 'corporate' rear-end. Power is slightly reduced to 98bhp (101bhp/ton), though top speed is improved to 112mph (better aerodynamics and gearing) and the sprint to 60mph is unchanged at 9.5 seconds. I have to say that I favour the Mk3 most of all (well I wouldn't have bought one, would I?) as I think it accepted the design changes better than the Spitfire and became a better car for it.


Comparative Performance

Triumph Spitfire Vs GT6 - which one is the best buy? Though the slower of the two types, the Spitfire probably has the edge in styling and the fact that it's a convertible more than makes up for its lack of pace.
